These five cards form a "cycle," each sharing common design elements across Magic's color spectrum. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures featuring an ability linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans, along with another that allows you to convert mana into a color from that clan.
"Three-color limited environments require robust mana fixing at all levels of rarity," explains Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak. "Our goal was to ensure many decks could access mana fixing easily. These creatures enable players to both develop their board presence and address mana issues simultaneously - unlike other options like tapped lands, which only generate mana and can put you at a disadvantage."

"These cards showcase the unique aspects of the clans since their last appearance. From the action-oriented Jeskai monks to the Temur's use of Whispers, the protective and avenging Nagas of the Sultai, the diverse military roles within the Mardu, and the Abzan clerics working to regrow the lost kin trees."
Recent Magic sets have faced criticism for leaning too heavily on thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting familiar planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its straightforward approach to returning to Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the importance of such feedback to Wizards of the Coast. "The core concept for Tarkir was set long before Murders at Karlov Manor and subsequent releases, and it remained unchanged. We aimed to blend Dragons and Clans in a fresh way, with Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role in shaping our return. Lauren and I felt the pressure to do justice to this beloved plane from the start, striving to craft an authentic and meaningful next chapter."Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, with the set slated for release in both physical and digital formats on April 11. In-store prerelease events will kick off on April 4. Continue reading for the full interview with Wizards of the Coast's Adam Prosak, Lauren Bond, and Forrest Schehl.
