"Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Theory Gains Traction"

by Mia May 13,2025

The recent unveiling of the Nintendo Switch 2 has sparked excitement, particularly around the intriguing possibility of using Joy-Con controllers as a mouse. In the reveal trailer, we see a moment where a pair of detached Joy-Cons are placed attachment side down on a surface, connecting to flat-bottomed connectors. These connectors then glide across the surface, reminiscent of a mouse on a mousepad. A closer look reveals what appears to be a slider pad on the bottom of one connector, lending further credence to the mouse-like functionality rumors.

Rumors have been circulating about this feature, suggesting that a sensor inside the Joy-Cons, similar to that found in computer mice, might enable this functionality. However, Nintendo has yet to confirm these speculations or clarify how this feature might be utilized. Enthusiasts have theorized that it could enhance gameplay for titles like Civilization, which traditionally benefit from mouse and keyboard controls. Yet, given Nintendo's track record of innovation, there's also speculation that this could be integrated into new and creative ways within their first-party titles.

While details about the potential mouse support for the Switch 2 remain speculative, along with the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, we do have some solid information. The console is officially named the Nintendo Switch 2, with a release planned for 2025. A new Mario Kart game is in development for the system, and it will be backward compatible with the original Switch. More details on the software lineup will be shared during a Direct event in April.
