The previous generation, the Sony XM4, was already an outstanding headphone, but the XM5 introduces key enhancements in noise cancellation and comfort. It features a second processor and double the microphones dedicated to filtering out ambient noise. The redesigned earcups fit more snugly, creating a better seal and thus improving passive noise isolation. The noise cancellation is markedly superior to that of the XM4 and outperforms most other noise-canceling headsets in its price range.
The Sony WH-1000XM5 sports a sleeker redesign with an updated headband adjustment style. The band is wider for better weight distribution, and the earcup padding is now made of a luxurious synthetic leather, offering enhanced comfort for extended wear. One minor drawback is that the XM5 can no longer be folded inward, only swiveled, making it less compact.
