Typically, 29 is enjoyed by four players split into fixed partnerships, sitting opposite each other. The game utilizes 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck, featuring eight cards per suit—hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The card hierarchy within each suit goes from high to low as follows: J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective? Win tricks that contain valuable cards to score points.
Here's how the points are allocated:
- Jacks - 3 points each
- Nines - 2 points each
- Aces - 1 point each
- Tens - 1 point each
- Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7) - no points
This setup totals 28 points from the cards. In some versions, an extra point is awarded for winning the last trick, bringing the potential total to 29 points—hence the game's name. Although many modern players do not count the last trick's point, the game retains the name "29" even in this 28-point version.
Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives, which are removed from the full deck, serve as trump indicators, with each player receiving one card of each suit from this set. Meanwhile, the Sixes are utilized for scoring, with each partnership using one red and one black Six.
