The Last of Us Franchise May Not Continue
Naughty Dog Hints at Series Conclusion

Naughty Dog's acclaimed post-apocalyptic series might end with The Last of Us Part II. In a March 2025 Variety interview, studio co-president Neil Druckmann cast doubt on the possibility of a third installment when asked about The Last of Us Part 3.
"Don't bet on more Last of Us content," Druckmann stated. "This might be it." His comments leave the gaming future of TLOU uncertain as Naughty Dog shifts focus to expanding the television adaptation.
The creative director previously discussed his philosophy on game sequels at DICE Summit 2025. "You jinx yourself by planning sequels during initial development," he told IGN. "While working on Part II, occasional ideas surfaced about future directions, but I approach each project as potentially final - including every worthwhile idea in the current game rather than saving them."
With The Last of Us Part II delivering a conclusive ending, these statements suggest no further game sequels are planned. Fans can still anticipate Season 2 of HBO's adaptation premiering April 13, 2025.
Naughty Dog Developing New Original IP

While TLOU's gaming future remains uncertain, Naughty Dog is creating an entirely new franchise. At The Game Awards 2024, they revealed Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet for PlayStation 5 through a sci-fi teaser trailer.
Development began in 2020, with the studio promising its most ambitious narrative yet. Despite the announcement, Naughty Dog has shared limited details about this upcoming title.
Intergalactic Development Led to TLOU Online Cancellation

The decision to cancel The Last of Us Online allowed full focus on Intergalactic. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida explained on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast how Bungie's expertise influenced this choice.
"Naughty Dog passionately developed TLOU Online," Yoshida recalled. "But Bungie's live-service guidance made them realize maintaining such a game would prevent creating Intergalactic." This strategic shift suggests the studio has temporarily moved on from the franchise.
Despite these developments, The Last of Us Part II Remastered arrives on PC April 3, 2025. Stay updated with our coverage below for the latest details on this enhanced version.
