Localthunk, the developer behind the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, has taken decisive action to address a controversy sparked in the game's subreddit concerning AI-generated art. The situation arose from comments made by DrTankHead, a former moderator of the Balatro subreddit and current moderator of a NSFW Balatro subreddit, who indicated no intention to ban AI art if it was properly tagged and claimed.
This stance was quickly contradicted by Localthunk, who clarified their position and that of their publisher, Playstack, on Bluesky. Localthunk emphasized a strong disapproval of AI-generated imagery, stating it was not used in Balatro and expressing concerns over its negative impact on artists. Following this, Localthunk made a comprehensive statement on the subreddit, confirming the removal of DrTankHead from the moderation team and announcing a ban on AI-generated images on the subreddit, with plans to update the rules and FAQ accordingly.
In response to the confusion, Playstack's communications director acknowledged that existing rules might have been misinterpreted and pledged to clarify them to prevent future misunderstandings. DrTankHead, after being removed as a moderator of r/Balatro, addressed the situation on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, clarifying that they did not aim to make it AI-centric but were open to designating specific days for AI-generated non-NSFW art posts.
The incident highlights the broader debate over generative AI in the gaming and entertainment industries, sectors that have faced significant layoffs and are grappling with ethical and rights issues related to AI use. Despite criticism and challenges, such as Keywords Studios' failed attempt to create an AI-generated game, tech giants like EA and Capcom continue to invest heavily in AI, with EA describing AI as central to its business and Capcom exploring its use for generating game environment ideas. Activision's recent use of generative AI for assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has also stirred controversy, particularly over a criticized "AI slop" zombie Santa loading screen.
