The inclusion of Bam Margera in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 came through a personal request rather than any demand, as Tony Hawk himself clarified. Discover the story behind Margera's last-minute addition and what's next for the iconic skating franchise.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4: Skater Lineup and Future Developments
Bam Margera's Presence Came By Request
Bam Margera's appearance in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 (THPS3+4) resulted from Tony Hawk's direct appeal to Activision, though the skating legend insists he never forced the publisher's hand. In a July 1 interview with Polygon, Hawk explained how he made a special request to include his longtime friend in the remaster.
Following the initial roster announcement in March, fans voiced disappointment at Margera's absence. The pro skater had become a staple character since the original THPS 3 and 4 through the Underground series.
While no official reasons were given, Margera's initial omission might relate to his well-documented personal challenges. However, series namesake Tony Hawk felt strongly about including his friend, recently noting Margera's improved situation: "I connected with him recently and he's in a really good place and skating a lot."
Hawk emphasized that while he advocated for Margera's inclusion near the game's completion, he didn't exert undue pressure: "I'm not a dictator in terms of how the game is run... [Activision] agreed, and I'm very thankful for that."
Jack Black Reprises Officer Dick Role with New Character
Another fan-favorite returning to the series is the hidden character Officer Dick, with Jack Black once again providing the voice and likeness. THPS' YouTube channel revealed on June 26th that Black would also portray a new U.K. counterpart - Constable Richard.
Game Director Kurt Tillmanns told Variety on June 25th: "We wanted to carry on the tradition of celebrity cameos in Tony Hawk games." The development team at Iron Galaxy expanded Officer Dick's role, evolving him from high school security to college campus sheriff.
Underground Series Remake Potential
With classic characters returning (including surprise guest Doomguy), speculation grows about potential Underground series remakes. Hawk acknowledged fan enthusiasm, stating: "I would do anything in my power if that's what makes players happy."
However, Hawk emphasized wanting to innovate beyond nostalgia: "To update it not just to celebrate the origins, but to include newer characters, tricks, and levels - that's the most exciting factor for me."
With Margera's inclusion and underground remake discussions, THPS3+4 promises both nostalgia and fresh experiences when it launches on July 11 for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC platforms, including Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
