Expanding the Cyberpunk Universe

Cyberpunk Sequel Codename Project Orion Development Insights

Codenamed Project Orion, the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel aims to expand the game world beyond Night City. At Digital Dragons 2025 on May 20, R. Talsorian Games founder Mike Pondsmith shared insights about the upcoming title.

Though less involved than with the original game, Pondsmith maintains close communication with the development team. "I review the scripts regularly," he explained. "Just last week I was consulting on new Cyberware designs and providing feedback."

The designer confirmed the addition of a second major city location, describing it as "Chicago gone wrong" rather than a Blade Runner-inspired aesthetic. "The team has captured exactly the right atmosphere," Pondsmith noted. "It feels authentic to the Cyberpunk universe."

Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red posted job listings revealing ambitious goals for Project Orion. The Lead Encounter Designer position seeks someone to "create revolutionary gameplay encounters that will redefine player expectations."

One particularly groundbreaking initiative involves developing "the most realistic and reactive crowd system in gaming history." While details remain scarce, these developments suggest CDPR aims to build upon Cyberpunk 2077's immersive world-building.
