The Witcher 4 was first unveiled to the gaming world during the Game Awards in December 2024. Accompanied by an intriguing trailer, the announcement spotlighted Ciri as the new protagonist, marking a significant departure from the series' traditional lead, Geralt. This revelation sparked widespread discussion and mixed reactions within the community.

In an interview with VGC, The Witcher 4's Narrative Director, Phillipp Weber, addressed the fans' concerns about this change. Weber, who also cherished playing as Geralt, emphasized the team's commitment to showcasing Ciri's potential and ensuring the transition resonates with fans. "The best thing that we can do, and I think this is really our goal, is to prove that with Ciri, we can do a lot of interesting things so we can really make it worth it because this decision to have Ciri as a protagonist wasn’t made yesterday, we started making this a very long time ago," Weber stated.
