Formovie's 4K Projector Reviewed: A Visual Feast

We receive a wide variety of hardware here at Droid Gamers, but a projector is definitely something new. The Formovie Episode One projector caught our eye as an interesting piece of technology to test, especially given its ability to stream mobile games on a much larger screen.

Marketed as an affordable option in a category typically known for high prices, we believe the Episode achieves this goal—and then some—despite a few drawbacks.

Inside the box, you'll find the projector itself, a remote (batteries not included), a power cable, and the user manual. It feels substantial enough, though it may lack the heavy-duty build of pricier models.

That said, its lightweight design makes it genuinely portable—weighing only three pounds, it’s easy to take with you on the go.

Some users might find the available ports a bit limited. There's just one USB-A port, one HDMI input, and a single audio jack. Still, given the projector's price point, this is to be expected, and it should easily meet the needs of most people.

In terms of performance, the Episode One holds its own for the cost. It offers 150 ISO lumens, so it’s not the brightest or most powerful laser projector available.

During testing, it had some trouble in bright daylight, but it performed very well in darker settings—just as you’d expect, but worth noting.

Every movie and TV show we tried came through clearly, and the games we streamed also ran smoothly.

We found that placing the projector at least 10 feet away provided the best image quality. The built-in sound was acceptable, though not outstanding.

The internal speaker tends to sound a bit thin and tinny. While it’s functional, we definitely recommend using an external speaker with the Episode One if possible.

As for the user interface, this model stands out as one of the more intuitive in its class. Setup and operation are straightforward, and its simplified, budget-friendly approach actually makes it easier to use than some of the more complex—and expensive—projectors we’ve tested.

Overall, the Formovie Episode One is an excellent entry-level projector. It may not excel in any single area, but it’s a reliable all-rounder that will serve the average casual user very well.

Purchasing an Episode One projector also comes with a Netflix gift card (worth $15/€15)—available only until May 27th. Click here to learn more.
