by Emily Oct 02,2025

Rockstar has postponed Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026, pushing back its original fall 2025 launch window.

In an official statement, Rockstar expressed regret over the substantial delay for what is anticipated to become the most monumental entertainment release in history.

"We sincerely apologize for this extended wait," Rockstar stated. "The overwhelming enthusiasm for a new Grand Theft Auto installment has deeply moved our entire development team. Your unwavering support and patience mean everything as we finalize the game."

"With every title we release, our ambition remains consistent: to surpass player expectations. Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We believe you'll understand why this additional development time is crucial to deliver the exceptional quality you deserve."

"Stay tuned for more updates coming soon."

While Rockstar's announcement confirms GTA VI's revised launch date, the absence of new trailers or platform specifics fuels speculation about potential PC availability alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions for May 2026.

"Release dates always carry inherent uncertainty," explained Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two, when questioned by IGN about meeting the initial fall 2025 target earlier this year. "Though we felt confident, we avoid absolute assurances."

In a May 2 investor briefing, Zelnick endorsed Rockstar's decision to shift GTA VI into Take-Two's fiscal year 2027.

"We wholeheartedly support Rockstar's commitment to perfecting Grand Theft Auto VI's ambitious vision – a revolutionary entertainment experience destined to redefine expectations."

"While we recognize the immense global anticipation for this title, our dedication to quality remains paramount. This strategic adjustment aligns with our multiyear growth strategy and shareholder value creation."

GTA VI's postponement creates breathing room for major 2025 releases including Borderlands 4, Battlefield, Marathon, and Ghost of Yotei. Nintendo's Switch 2 launch also stands to benefit significantly from this schedule shift.

Conversely, studios that accelerated development to precede GTA VI's original window may face challenges. Any games targeting May 2026 releases will likely require strategic reconsideration.
