"Hollow Knight: Silksong Playable at Australian Museum in September 2025"

by Sadie May 15,2025

IGN has exciting news for fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong: the long-awaited sequel will be playable at Australia's national museum of screen culture, ACMI, starting September 18, 2025. Developed by Team Cherry, a studio based in Adelaide, South Australia, Silksong has been one of the most anticipated indie games, topping the Steam wishlist chart for years. While the exact release date remains a mystery beyond a general 2025 window, this playable demo at ACMI offers a tantalizing glimpse into the game's world.

The game will be featured in the Melbourne museum's "Game Worlds" exhibition, which will not only allow visitors to play Silksong but also explore the game's intricate design and artistic direction through various displays. This exhibition promises to delve into the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s movements and attacks, as well as the logic behind the game’s challenging boss fights.

ACMI co-curators Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell expressed their excitement about showcasing Silksong: “Since Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet – and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centrepiece of Game Worlds in September. From the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s different movements and attacks, to the logic behind the game’s most challenging boss fights – and of course, having the game playable in-gallery – our Silksong displays delve deeply into the details of the game's artistic direction and design. We’re so grateful to Team Cherry for trusting us with their work, and so excited to share that work with you!”

As part of the announcement, ACMI shared a sprite sheet from Silksong, one of several design elements that will be on display in the "Game Worlds" exhibition. The image was provided to IGN with permission.

With Silksong set to be playable at ACMI from September 18, fans are hopeful that the game's full release might occur before then, possibly in August. The anticipation continues to build, especially after Silksong made a brief appearance at Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct last month, confirming the 2025 release window. This was the most significant update on Silksong in years, featuring a few seconds of new gameplay.

Originally announced for Nintendo Switch and PC, with versions for Xbox (and Game Pass), PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 to follow, Silksong has been the subject of numerous teases over the years. Team Cherry started 2025 with a mysterious tease involving a chocolate cake recipe, sparking hopes among fans for a re-reveal in April.
