Kingdom Hearts 4 Gears Up as Missing-Link Is Axed
New Screenshots Reveal a Fresh Heartless Type and Playable King Mickey
After three years with no updates, Kingdom Hearts 4 has finally broken its silence with a series of screenshots. On May 15, the official Kingdom Hearts social media channels released a collection of brand-new images, offering fans a long-awaited look at the upcoming sequel. Square Enix accompanied the reveal with a message confirming that active development continues.
"The team is diligently working on Kingdom Hearts IV and remains fully committed to its creation. We are dedicated to delivering an experience that meets your high expectations!" the statement begins. It continues, "We have seen your incredible enthusiasm and are sincerely grateful. We share your excitement and look forward to sharing more about Kingdom Hearts IV at the appropriate time. Thank you for your ongoing patience."

While no release window was provided, the new images have sparked fresh theories and optimism. One screenshot, in particular, has captured widespread attention: it seemingly shows a playable King Mickey. Mickey has been controllable in past games like Kingdom Hearts 2 and 358/2 Days, though his roles were often brief or situational. This teaser suggests he might return as a playable character, even if for a limited segment.
Some speculation places the library Mickey is seen in within Scala ad Caelum, a world Sora visited late in Kingdom Hearts 3. His purpose there is unclear, but he may be researching the Foretellers—a group of Keyblade Masters expected to be central to the new saga.

Other screenshots feature Sora, with his updated, more realistic design, in various situations. One image shows a battle against a new form of Heartless, while another depicts Sora in Quadratum's streets as a distant light shower illuminates the scene. Notably, the combat screenshot hints at a potential "Build" mechanic, possibly linked to Sora's ability to summon tools like grappling hooks or drills.
Another image features Strelitzia—a character from the reveal trailer and Kingdom Hearts Union X—alongside a rotary phone. Given that Quadratum is based on real-world Tokyo, as director Tetsuya Nomura noted in a 2022 Famitsu interview, such classic phones fit the setting. It remains to be seen how this impacts the gummiphones from Kingdom Hearts 3, but fans can hope to still use them for photos and the series' in-universe social media app.
