Dynasty Warriors: Origins - How To Switch Characters

Quick Links

Dynasty Warriors: Origins centers on the Wanderer’s journey to restore peace to the land. The main story offers plenty of choices, and no matter your decisions, you’ll almost always have companions fighting alongside you.

Your companions stay close on the battlefield and can sometimes be taken under your direct control. They’re exceptionally strong—controlling them is often far more effective than relying on the Wanderer’s upgrades. Here’s how to switch between characters.

How To Switch Characters In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

You can only switch to a companion during battles where one is present. Before each battle, during the war council, the final menu option lets you select your companion. You can choose to fight alone if preferred, but no other companions are available at this stage. Once the battle starts, your companion’s health bar appears in the bottom-right corner, just above yours.

Beneath their health bar is a blue meter—similar to your own Musou gauge. It fills as you fight, gaining energy from:

  • Parrying attacks
  • Perfect dodges
  • Attacking officers
  • Using Weapon Arts

Most combat actions contribute to filling this bar, though at a slower rate.

When the blue meter is completely full, the “Change Character” button appears beside it. Press and hold the button for roughly one second to switch. On Xbox, use the View button; on PC, press C; on PlayStation, use the Touchpad.

Playing As Other Characters In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Switch to a companion only during large-scale fights, since they’re extremely powerful—and you’ll only control them for about a minute. The blue meter that filled up to unlock them now slowly depletes, showing your remaining time. Your new character starts with full Bravery and a set of powerful combat arts ready to use.

When you switch, your companion leaps into battle with a powerful strike—make sure to aim at an enemy when you switch. They also come with their own fully charged Musou and health bars, letting you immediately unleash their unique special attack to devastate enemies.
