Nintendo Switch Online App Gets Major Update

by Adam Dec 22,2025

With just days remaining until the Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5, Nintendo has overhauled its Nintendo Switch Online app, starting with a significant rebrand to Nintendo Switch App.

This marks a major shift, particularly since "Nintendo Switch Online" has long been tied to Nintendo's subscription service for online gaming. The membership provides multiplayer functionality for cooperative or competitive play, along with access to classic Nintendo titles spanning four decades—including NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and soon (with Nintendo Switch 2's launch) the GameCube library.

Version 3.0.1 not only simplifies the app's name but also introduces a redesigned interface for improved usability. The update adds support for Nintendo Switch 2 consoles and GameChat invitations. Users can now manage their friends list directly in the app and opt to receive notifications when friends come online.

One standout improvement—especially for content creators—is the streamlined media management, allowing direct uploads of screenshots and videos from your console to the app.
