Nintendo Warns U.S. Customers: Switch 2 Release Not Guaranteed Due to High Demand

by Zoe May 24,2025

Nintendo has issued a crucial update regarding the release-day delivery of the much-anticipated Switch 2, alerting its U.S. fans that they may not receive their consoles on the launch date of June 5, 2025. This follows a similar warning to its Japanese customers about struggling to meet demand.

On Nintendo's official website, a notice was posted to those who had registered their interest in purchasing a Switch 2 through the My Nintendo Store. The company stated that due to high demand, it cannot guarantee delivery by the release date. Consequently, invitation emails for purchase might be sent out after the console's launch. However, Nintendo assures buyers that they will confirm the shipping date upon purchase.

"Thank you to those of you who have already registered your interest in purchasing from My Nintendo Store," the statement read. "We're thrilled by the enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2! Due to the very high demand, we will be working diligently to fulfill orders as product becomes available, but delivery by June 5 is not guaranteed. Your invitation email may arrive after the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. We'll confirm your shipping date upon purchase."

Nintendo has suggested that fans might have a better chance of securing a Switch 2 at launch by pre-ordering through third-party retailers. However, this advice comes as a concern since Switch 2 pre-orders at retailers like GameStop have already sold out shortly after going live.

"If you wish to increase your opportunity of obtaining a Nintendo Switch 2 system at launch, please visit our participating retail partners above," the statement advised, directing users to a GameStop link. "If you wish to continue waiting for your invitation from My Nintendo Store, no further action is required after registering your interest."

The challenges fans faced when trying to pre-order the Switch 2 on April 24, combined with Nintendo's recent warning, indicate that obtaining the next-gen console around its launch will be quite difficult.

Earlier this week, Nintendo also warned its customers in Japan, noting that a significant number would miss out on pre-ordering the Switch 2 directly from the company. In a statement to X / Twitter, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that 2.2 million people in Japan had applied for a pre-order from the My Nintendo Store. He explained that this "extremely large number of applications... far exceeds our expectations, and far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the My Nintendo Store on June 5."

According to an FAQ on Nintendo’s website, the first batch of invitations for the U.S. My Nintendo Store will be sent starting May 8, 2025. Subsequent batches of invitation emails will be dispatched periodically until purchasing is open to everyone. Initial emails will be sent on a first-come, first-serve basis to eligible registrants who meet specific priority criteria. Invitees will have 72 hours from the time the email is sent to complete their purchase.

Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order invitation priority requirements:

  • You must have purchased any Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • You must have had any paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for a minimum of 12 months.
  • You must have opted in to share gameplay data and have at least 50 hours total gameplay hours.

Last week, Nintendo confirmed that Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. would begin on April 24, 2025, maintaining the original price of $449.99 and the launch date of June 5. Additionally, the Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle will remain at $499.99, and the prices for both the physical and digital versions of Mario Kart World ($79.99) and Donkey Kong Bananza ($69.99) will not change at launch. However, amid ongoing tariff issues, Nintendo has increased the prices of Switch 2 accessories.

Nintendo had initially planned to open pre-orders for the Switch 2 on April 9 but delayed them to assess the impact of tariffs and market conditions.
