Pedro Pascal Addresses Fantastic Four Casting Backlash

by George Nov 04,2025

Pedro Pascal acknowledges the mixed reactions to his casting as Reed Richards in Marvel's upcoming "The Fantastic Four: First Steps," but finds reassurance in Iron Man and Doctor Doom actor Robert Downey Jr.

The 50-year-old actor will debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this July as part of "The Fantastic Four" ensemble. With Marvel Studios and Disney aiming for higher success than recent MCU entries like "Captain America: Brave New World" and "Thunderbolts*," expectations are soaring for what could be one of 2025's biggest films.

In a Vanity Fair interview, Pascal admitted noticing more skepticism about his portrayal of Mister Fantastic than any previous role—surpassing critiques of his casting as Joel in HBO's "The Last of Us," Oberyn Martell in "Game of Thrones," or Din Djarin in "The Mandalorian."

"I sense growing excitement because it aligns with our creative vision—pouring everything we've got into this genre," Pascal shared. "Still, you can never predict whether audiences will embrace that passion."

"The criticism feels more pronounced this time," he added. "Some say I'm too old, miscast, or even that I should shave."

Casting debates have followed Pascal since his announcement as Reed Richards, with some questioning his physical resemblance to the comic character—particularly regarding facial hair—while others argue judging his performance from brief footage would be premature.

Pascal revealed an unexpected supporter in Robert Downey Jr., his future co-star in 2026's "Avengers: Doomsday." Though tight-lipped about the secretive project, Pascal praised Downey Jr.'s encouraging presence: "His warmth makes you feel safe admitting uncertainties—whether fear, doubt, or creative hunger."

Marvel Studios appears bullish about this "Fantastic Four" iteration, reportedly greenlighting a sequel weeks before the film's theatrical release.
