Sony has announced the termination of its PlayStation Stars loyalty program, less than three years after its inception. As of today, the program will not accept new members, and those who cancel their membership will be unable to rejoin, with all reward points being permanently deleted upon cancellation.
Current members, however, can continue earning points until July 23, 2025, and will have until November 3, 2026, to redeem their accumulated points. In a positive note for collectors, Sony has confirmed that the Digital Collectibles from PlayStation Stars, such as the 3D digital model of a Jim Ryan bobblehead, will remain accessible for the foreseeable future despite the program's end.
Grace Chen, PlayStation's Vice President of Network Advertising, Loyalty, and Licensed Merchandise, stated on the PlayStation blog, "Since launching the program, we've learned a lot from evaluating the types of activities our players respond best to, and as a company, we are always evolving with player and industry trends. Through this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and will be winding down the current version of PlayStation Stars. We will continue to evaluate our key findings from this program, and are looking into ways to build upon these learnings."
Sony has not announced a replacement for the scheme, nor has it disclosed specific findings from running PlayStation Stars. The program, which launched in July 2022, was designed to reward PS5 owners with points that had real cash value based on purchases made in the PlayStation Store and for completing tasks such as surveys or trying out new games and system features. It was a direct competitor to Microsoft's Xbox Rewards, though both programs have seen modifications over time, becoming less lucrative for users.
PlayStation Stars faced a service outage for a month last summer, and in October, Sony introduced changes that reduced the validity of points from 24 months to 12 months and eliminated PlayStation Plus membership as a points-eligible purchase. Now, the entire program is set to be discontinued.
