Rambo is set to make a thrilling return with a prequel project titled "John Rambo," helmed by the director of "Sisu" and "Big Game," Jalmari Helander. According to Deadline, Millennium Media is actively launching this film at the Cannes market, an event that coincides with the Cannes Film Festival and serves as a platform for unveiling and promoting upcoming film projects to potential investors and distribution partners. Millennium Media, known for producing the Expendables and Has Fallen series, previously contributed to the 2008 film "Rambo" and the 2019 release "Rambo: Last Blood."
Details about "John Rambo" remain scarce, but it is confirmed that the story will be set during the Vietnam War, serving as a prequel to the iconic 1982 film "First Blood." No casting decisions have been finalized, and while Sylvester Stallone, the original Rambo, is aware of the project, he is not currently involved.
The screenplay for "John Rambo" has been crafted by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, known for their work on "The Mauritanian" and "Black Adam." Production is slated to commence in Thailand in October. Although a Rambo prequel might come as a surprise, Helander's experience with the action-packed 2023 WWII film "Sisu"—which transformed the John Wick concept into an elderly Finnish commando battling Nazis during the Lapland War—demonstrates his capability to deliver high-octane action.
