Rumors are swirling that a Nintendo Switch 2 port of the critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption 2 could hit the market by the end of 2025. Alongside this, a next-gen upgrade for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S is reportedly in the works. This exciting news comes from GameReactor, which cites sources "close to Rockstar" indicating that the Switch 2 will see Rockstar's beloved Wild West adventure, accompanied by a "next-gen upgrade patch" designed to enhance the gaming experience on current-gen consoles.
While specifics remain scarce, GameReactor's sources suggest that both the port and the upgrade could potentially launch as soon as later this year. This aligns with reports from Nintenduo, which also mentions that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 might be released within Take-Two's current financial year, ending on March 31, 2026. It's still up in the air whether the game will be available digitally-only or if physical copies will be offered as well.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 debuted in 2018, we at IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10 score. IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review praised the game, calling it "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era."
The prospect of Red Dead Redemption 2 making its way to the Switch 2 might not be shocking, especially after Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's upcoming platform during a Q&A with investors. Zelnick highlighted Nintendo's improved support for third-party publishers this time around, stating, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform."
He further elaborated, "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

Take-Two is set to bring a diverse lineup to the Switch 2, including Civilization 7 on its launch day, June 5, along with the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (specific games and release dates TBD), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. Given Take-Two's history with the Nintendo Switch, these titles are expected, but Zelnick's comments suggest the possibility of more titles from their back catalog making an appearance. While GTA 6 might not be on the cards, classics like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 could potentially join the roster.
