Robert Eggers, renowned for his gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to direct and co-write a sequel to the iconic 1986 dark fantasy movie Labyrinth. This new project follows the original film, which starred David Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth and Jennifer Connelly as a young girl on a quest to rescue her kidnapped baby brother from a fantastical world filled with Jim Henson's imaginative puppets.
Eggers will collaborate on the screenplay with Sjón, his partner from The Northman. Previously, a sequel to Labyrinth was in development with Scott Derrickson, known for Sinister, but the project stalled without updates since 2023. TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have now opted to proceed with Eggers' vision for the sequel.
In addition to the Labyrinth sequel, Eggers is also working on a werewolf movie titled Werwulf, slated for a Christmas 2026 release. Set in 13th-century England, the film will feature dialogue in Old English, hinting at a deeply historical and atmospheric narrative centered around a transformation into a wolf monster.
Eggers' latest release, Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 silent film by F.W. Murnau, was released last Christmas. Set in 19th-century Germany, it follows a young real estate agent's harrowing journey to Transylvania, which unleashes vampiric horrors upon him and his wife, Ellen. The film has garnered significant acclaim, earning four Oscar nominations in the categories of Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.
