ScratchJr draws inspiration from the renowned Scratch programming language, which has empowered millions of older kids (ages 8 and up) worldwide. To cater to younger audiences, we've tailored ScratchJr's interface and programming language to be developmentally appropriate. Every aspect of ScratchJr has been thoughtfully designed to align with young children's cognitive, personal, social, and emotional growth.
We believe that coding, much like writing, is a crucial form of literacy. It helps children organize their thoughts and express their ideas. While coding was once thought to be too challenging for most, we at ScratchJr are convinced that it should be accessible to everyone, just as writing is.
Through ScratchJr, children don't just interact with computers; they learn to create and express themselves using technology. This process fosters problem-solving, project design, and sequencing skills, which are essential for academic success. Additionally, ScratchJr supports early childhood numeracy and literacy by integrating math and language in an engaging and meaningful way.
