Cheat Developer Shuts Down, Players Doubt

by Anthony May 20,2025

The well-known Call of Duty cheat provider, Phantom Overlay, has announced its immediate shutdown through a statement on Telegram. The company emphasized that this closure is not an exit scam, and they are committed to keeping their services online for an additional 32 days to ensure users with 30-day keys can fully utilize their purchases. Additionally, partial refunds will be provided to those who purchased lifetime keys. The decision to close down could significantly impact the broader cheating ecosystem, as many other cheat providers rely on Phantom Overlay's systems.

Reactions among the gaming community have been mixed. One gamer expressed disbelief on X, formerly known as Twitter, wondering if this means the Season 3 cheat update will be effective. However, skepticism persists, with some users suggesting that Phantom Overlay might simply be rebranding and that the cheating issue won't disappear.

Will You Return to Warzone for Verdansk? ----------------------------------------

Activision recently acknowledged that its Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 anti-cheat measures "did not hit the mark" during the launch of Season 1, especially in Ranked Play. Initially, the company had promised to remove cheaters from the game within an hour of their first match. Despite this initial failure, Activision has since improved its efforts, with the Ricochet Anti-Cheat system now banning cheaters more swiftly and having removed over 19,000 accounts recently.

The ongoing issue of cheating has been seen by some as detrimental to the competitive multiplayer experience, leading to criticism of Activision's handling of the problem. The situation became dire enough that with the release of Season 2, console players in Ranked Play were given the option to disable crossplay with PC players, aiming to reduce encounters with cheaters.

Cheating is a widespread problem across many games, but it has been particularly challenging for Activision since the launch of the free-to-play Warzone in 2020. Despite significant investments in anti-cheat technology and legal actions against cheat developers, which have seen recent successes, skepticism about the effectiveness of the Ricochet system persists among fans.

In other news, there's excitement building as we approach March 10, when more details about the anticipated return of the beloved Call of Duty Warzone Verdansk map are expected to be revealed.
