Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein is as intense as Dr. Frankenstein's own obsession with his creation. During the Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director shared a video message, teasing his long-awaited adaptation of the classic tale. Although a trailer won't be released until this summer, Netflix unveiled a first-look image featuring Oscar Isaac as the iconic mad scientist.
In the video, del Toro expressed his deep connection to the project, stating, "This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years. I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." As he spoke, he gestured towards the numerous Frankenstein figures and collectibles in his renowned Bleak House's Frankenstein room, underscoring his dedication.
Del Toro also offered a glimpse of footage showcasing Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth, who plays a seemingly affluent aristocrat, as well as Jacob Elordi's portrayal of Frankenstein's monster. The monster is described with "long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a glint of red in his eyes." However, this footage is not currently available online.
Reflecting on his personal connection to the character, del Toro remarked, "You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography. It doesn’t get more personal than this." This statement highlights the profound impact the story has had on him, transcending mere filmmaking into a deeply personal journey.
The journey to bring Frankenstein to the screen has been long and arduous for del Toro, mirroring the dedication and perseverance of the character he so admires. The anticipation for this project is high, as fans and cinephiles alike eagerly await the summer trailer and the eventual release of this personal and long-gestating film.
