Hyper Light Breaker, the eagerly awaited successor to the indie hit Hyper Light Drifter, redefines its predecessor’s formula. Transitioning from 2D pixel art to a vibrant 3D world, it blends rogue-lite and extraction mechanics, departing from the linear RPG structure, while introducing multiplayer functionality.

Playing Hyper Light Breaker with friends is a central feature, enhancing gameplay and making challenges more engaging with a teammate. This guide details how to team up with friends in Hyper Light Breaker and how to join or create random public groups for online matchmaking.

Playing Hyper Light Breaker with Friends

To enjoy co-op multiplayer in Hyper Light Breaker with friends, set up a private multiplayer room. After arriving at the Cursed Outpost, the game’s hub, approach the counter to the left of your commander, Pherus Bit, located opposite the entrance to the Outpost.

Press the Interact button (usually R1 or RB) at the counter to access the Multiplayer menu. Here, you can form a Breaker Team, join an existing one, or view invitations. To play with friends, select "Create Breaker Team."

In the menu, enable "Password Required" and enter a password. After creating your private Breaker Team, invite up to two friends via your platform’s social service—PSN, Xbox, and Steam are supported. The game accommodates groups of up to three players.

If your friend is already in-game, the invitation will appear in the "Invitations" tab of the Multiplayer menu. Otherwise, they can join using the invitation link sent to them.

Your team may also appear in the general "Join Breaker Team" menu if space is available. As a fallback, friends can browse this list to join your private group directly.

Once your friend accepts the invite and enters the password, you’re set to embark on co-op Hyper Light Breaker adventures together.

Joining Random Online Matches in Hyper Light Breaker

If you lack friends who play Hyper Light Breaker but want to team up, the game supports public groups for open matchmaking. Create a public group as described above, omitting the password, or join a random group via the matchmaking system.

In the Cursed Outpost’s multiplayer menu, select "Join Breaker Team," scroll to the bottom, and choose "Join Random Public Breaker Team."

The system will search for available, non-password-protected public Breaker Teams and place you in one if available. After a brief loading screen, you’ll join the team creator’s world.

To leave a multiplayer session, return to the counter in the Cursed Outpost and open the multiplayer menu. A disconnect option will appear at the bottom if you’re in a session.

Select this to return to your own world. Alternatively, exiting the game will also end the multiplayer session.
