The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken a significant step forward by securing John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein as its screenwriters. Known for their work on the successful film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein bring a proven track record of transforming beloved games into compelling cinematic experiences.
Announced recently, Daley and Goldstein will pen the screenplay for this film adaptation of Hasbro's iconic board game. The project is set to be produced by Margot Robbie under her production banner, LuckyChap, adding further star power to the endeavor.
In addition to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein have been busy with other notable projects. They wrote and directed the original film Mayday and contributed their writing talents to major superhero films such as The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when director Ridley Scott showed interest. In 2011, Scott enlisted writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, but that project ultimately did not materialize. Subsequent attempts in 2015 involved Lionsgate and Hasbro teaming up with writer Andrew Niccol, followed by reports in 2019 of actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story joining the project. However, none of these earlier efforts came to fruition.
The current push for the Monopoly movie gained momentum following Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, sparking renewed efforts to bring this classic game to life on the screen. Fans of Monopoly and cinema alike will be eagerly watching to see if this version finally manages to "pass Go" and make it to theaters.
