Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Face Store Restrictions to Combat Scalpers

by Dylan May 04,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and it's poised to be a highly sought-after product. To manage the anticipated demand, Nintendo is introducing pre-order measures on the official Nintendo store to ensure that genuine Switch enthusiasts can secure their units.

Through the My Nintendo Store, individuals with a Nintendo Account can register their interest in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 system along with "select accessories." Those who sign up will receive an invitation email when their turn arrives, which remains valid for 72 hours. However, there's a catch: you must demonstrate dedication to the Nintendo ecosystem. Specifically, "invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025," according to the site's fine print.

Nintendo also emphasizes that these invitations are "non-transferable" and will be sent to the email addresses linked to the registering Nintendo Account. There's a limit of one system and one accessory per account during the invitation period. Currently, interested parties can express their interest in either a base Nintendo Switch 2 system or one bundled with Mario Kart World.

Once ordered, the systems will be shipped post-purchase, with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of ordering. Nintendo clarifies, "Please note that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times."

These measures suggest Nintendo's intent to ensure that buyers are those genuinely interested in playing on the Switch 2, rather than reselling it online for profit.

Scalping has been a persistent issue with new releases of popular products. Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S faced significant scalping challenges, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game continues to struggle with shortages and scalping.

Valve implemented a successful queue system for the Steam Deck, linking purchases to Steam accounts and checking account creation dates. This approach appears to have inspired Nintendo's strategy with the My Nintendo Store process.

While there will be other avenues to acquire a Nintendo Switch 2, these measures are designed to help long-time Switch owners navigate the potential frenzy of securing a launch day pre-order.
