Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has rolled out its eagerly awaited final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. Launched on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 is the last major update for the game. This milestone has triggered a significant boost in player numbers, propelling BG3 just outside Steam's top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game has now leaped to over 169,000 players at the time of writing.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared his excitement about the player surge on Twitter (X) on April 22, crediting the game's robust mod support for enabling the studio to shift focus toward their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will step away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new creative horizons.
In light of this, D&D's stewards, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, are set to continue the Baldur’s Gate legacy without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

Patch 8, first announced in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, has been meticulously crafted over months.
