Still wondering about Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars film? Rest assured—the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still on board, and the project’s writer, Jonathan Tropper, just shared a reassuring update.
Tropper expressed his enthusiasm to Screen Rant, saying, "I'm excited too—and I hope it arrives sooner than you might expect."
Details remain scarce so far, but one thing we do know is that the story unfolds after The Rise of Skywalker. According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who spoke with Deadline in February, Levy’s standalone Star Wars film is “set after the first nine episodes—roughly five or six years later.” This positions it as the first cinematic venture into the post–Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same interview, Kennedy confirmed that Levy’s movie will follow 2026’s The Mandalorian & Grogu. "Right now I'm producing the Mandalorian film, followed by Shawn Levy's," she explained. Additionally, it has been widely reported that Ryan Gosling is slated to star.
Tropper’s comments offer hope that the project is finally gaining momentum. Still, the earliest possible release would be late 2026—or possibly 2027—so there’s still a long wait ahead.
While Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the widely criticized Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, multiple movies have been canceled during that time—including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a planned trilogy by Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A previously scheduled late-2026 Star Wars movie was also pulled from Disney’s calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a Dave Filoni–directed New Republic movie set in the Mando-verse, James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s New Jedi Order film, in which Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy film has experienced some creative shifts, including screenwriter Steven Knight’s departure—after he replaced original writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite the changes, Rey remains a key part of Disney’s future plans, with a recent THR report indicating she will appear in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.
Believe it or not, that’s not everything Disney has in store. Late last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is writing a new trilogy—one that, despite early speculation, does not continue the Skywalker Saga.
Up next for Star Wars fans is Season 2 of Andor, which premieres on Disney+ on April 22 with a special triple-episode launch.
