Spectre Divide Shuts Down Weeks After Console Debut

by Hazel Jul 30,2025

Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide will cease operations six months after its September 2024 launch, only weeks following its release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Mountaintop Studios, the game's developer, is also closing its doors.

Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell announced the closure in a social media statement today.

“Regrettably, the Season 1 launch didn’t deliver the success required to sustain the game or keep Mountaintop operational,” the statement noted.

The team initially reported strong engagement, with about 400,000 players and a peak of 10,000 concurrent users across platforms in the first week.

“However, player activity and revenue have not been sufficient to cover the ongoing costs of Spectre and the studio,” the statement continued. “Since the PC launch, we’ve stretched our funds as far as possible, but we’ve now run out of resources to maintain the game.”

“We explored every option, including securing a publisher, additional investment, or acquisition, but none panned out. The industry is facing challenging times.”

Spectre Divide will go offline within the next 30 days, with refunds issued for purchases made since the Season 1 launch.

This closure contradicts October 2024 statements claiming Spectre Divide was here to stay.

“The servers will remain active, and updates will continue,” Mitchell had said, asserting Mountaintop had “sufficient funding to support Spectre for the long term.”

IGN’s August 2024 preview praised Spectre Divide’s tactical 3v3 gameplay and innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters in matches. Yet, its swift shutdown follows a string of other live-service game disappointments, such as Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Sony’s Concord.
