FromSoftware has revealed fresh details about its Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. The collaboration with Nintendo has influenced not only the game’s style but also transformed the design of the hub area’s keeper into something unexpectedly charming.
The trailer showcased during the Switch 2 Direct this week ended with a glimpse of a winged rat character, adorned with glowing glyphs, staring directly at the camera. Fans may have been curious about this creature’s role. As it turns out, this rat serves as the new hub companion.
"This character plays a role similar to the fire keepers in the Dark Souls series, staying in the hub to offer players advice and guidance," director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained in a Nintendo interview.
"We embraced a touch of Nintendo’s playful spirit in this partnership," he added.
When pressed on what he meant, Miyazaki elaborated: "We went for something delightfully cute this time. Though, I should note, this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughs)."
FromSoftware’s shrine keepers have long been pivotal figures in players’ journeys through their intricate worlds. Familiar characters like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll are constants, offering strength and support to progress.
In a PvPvE game like The Duskbloods, the winged rat’s guidance remains a mystery. Miyazaki hinted that FromSoftware is experimenting with "fresh and exciting ideas," so players should brace for surprises when the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
More details on The Duskbloods are available, including Bloodborne fans’ reactions and Miyazaki’s thoughts on whether FromSoftware will shift away from single-player games.
