Top Comics of 2024 Ranked: Marvel, DC, Independents

by Hannah May 02,2025

In 2024, readers turned to the familiar for comfort, and fortunately, many of these stories were not only excellent but also innovative. Navigating the vast sea of weekly releases from major publishers, along with the diverse array of graphic novels catering to all ages, can be daunting. Here's a curated list of our favorite comics from 2024, focusing primarily on Marvel and DC, with a few notable exceptions in the near-superhero genre.

Before diving into the list, a few notes:

  • The focus is exclusively on the Big Two, with a few exceptions for near-superhero titles.
  • Comics needed to have at least 10 issues to qualify, excluding newer series like Ultimates, Absolute Batman, the "From the Ashes" X-titles relaunch, and Aaron's Ninja Turtles.
  • The entire run of each comic was considered, not just the issues released in 2024, with the exceptions of Jed McKay's Moon Knight and Joshua Williamson's Robin.
  • Anthologies with diverse author lineups, such as Action Comics and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, were not included.

Table of Content ---

  1. Batman: Zdarsky Run
  2. Nightwing by Tom Taylor
  3. Blade + Blade: Red Band
  4. Vengeance of the Moon Knight + Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu
  5. Outsiders
  6. Poison Ivy
  7. Batman and Robin by Joshua Williamson
  8. Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver
  9. The Flash Series by Simon Spurrier
  10. The Immortal Thor by Al Ewing
  11. Venom + Venom War
  12. John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America
  13. Ultimate X-men by Peach Momoko

Batman: Zdarsky Run

This run could have easily been forgettable, but instead, it delivered a technically impressive narrative about the battle against an impostor Batman. The neuro-arc involving the Joker, however, was a misstep.

Nightwing by Tom Taylor

Had this series concluded 20 issues earlier, it might have topped the list. Unfortunately, the finale was marred by too much filler content. Despite this, the series had its memorable moments, though it didn't reach the potential to become the next Hawkeye.

Blade + Blade: Red Band

While the film languished in development, the comic filled the void perfectly, delivering a thrilling, bloody action-packed adventure featuring the Daywalker.

Vengeance of the Moon Knight + Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu

2024 was a tumultuous year for Moon Knight. Revived prematurely, the narrative suffered as the new successor's story was rushed, and the emotional arcs of those close to him were hastily resolved. Despite these issues, there's hope that Jed McKay's current series will redeem the character.

Outsiders

This series, a reimagining of Planetary within the DC Universe, often delves into meta-commentary. While the approach can feel heavy-handed at times, it remains a respectful nod to the original.

Poison Ivy

Poison Ivy's ongoing soliloquy has stretched to over 30 issues, a testament to its enduring appeal. The series blends psychedelic and social commentary, offering a unique reading experience.

Batman and Robin by Joshua Williamson

Williamson's return to Damian Wayne pits him against a new adversary: school. While it doesn't reach the heights of the original Robin series, it's a compelling exploration of growth, father-son dynamics, and self-discovery, with the added charm of the Robinmobile.

Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver

A surprising gem, this series offers a cozy and visually stunning take on Wanda's world. Its charm lies in its unpretentious simplicity, making it a delightful read.

The Flash Series by Simon Spurrier

This series demands patience and engagement, with its intentionally complex narrative. The journey is unpredictable, but for those willing to invest, it promises a rewarding experience.

The Immortal Thor by Al Ewing

Al Ewing's name on the cover is the only reason to continue with this series, which struggles to balance its mythological and superhero elements. The artwork, however, is stunning, and the hope of reaching a narrative climax keeps readers engaged.

Venom + Venom War

A chaotic and exhilarating read, this series has been revisited multiple times for its sheer intensity and depth.

John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America

The UK segment of this series is a standout, with memorable moments like the mermaid and unicorn scenes. The US segment, however, delves into heavy-handed themes. Despite this, Spurrier's portrayal of Constantine remains compelling, and the memorable moments will endure.

Ultimate X-men by Peach Momoko

This unique blend of manga, psychological horror, and X-Men lore, delivered monthly by Peach Momoko, is a remarkable achievement. It seamlessly integrates all its elements into a captivating narrative.
