Capcom confirms renewed focus on breathing life into classic game franchises, beginning with the beloved Okami and Onimusha series. Discover which nostalgic titles might return to prominence.
Capcom Commits to Bringing Back Beloved Classics
Revival Efforts Begin with Okami and Onimusha
In Capcom's December 13 press release announcing new Onimusha and Okami titles, the company outlined plans to continue revitalizing dormant franchises with premium gaming experiences.
The upcoming Onimusha installment arrives in 2026, transporting players to Kyoto during Japan's Edo period. Simultaneously, Capcom unveiled a new Okami sequel helmed by the original team, though its launch window remains undisclosed.
"We're prioritizing the reactivation of long-dormant IPs," Capcom stated. "By leveraging our extensive content library - including revivals like these announced titles - we aim to consistently deliver high-quality, commercially successful games while maximizing corporate value."
The company balances these revivals with upcoming projects like Monster Hunter Wilds and Capcom Fighting Collection 2 (both hitting shelves in 2025), alongside recent releases such as Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Exoprimal.
Fan Polls Hint at Future Resurrections
Capcom's February 2024 "Super Election" survey allowed fans to vote for desired character returns and franchise continuations. Results spotlighted overwhelming demand for Dino Crisis, Darkstalkers, Onimusha, and Breath of Fire sequels/remakes.
Some franchises like Dino Crisis (last entry: 1997) and Darkstalkers (2003) have seen no activity for decades. Though Breath of Fire's online RPG iteration launched in 2016, it shuttered barely a year later, leaving these iconic series dormant.
While Capcom hasn't confirmed specific revival plans beyond Okami and Onimusha (both ranking high in fan polls), these survey results likely influence corporate decisions regarding which classics deserve modern reboots.
