Garena Free City, the latest addition to the developer's extensive lineup, is now open for pre-registration on both iOS and Android platforms in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. If you've been eagerly anticipating the next installment in a certain iconic series, Garena Free City might just be the perfect interim entertainment.
Let's get straight to the point: Garena Free City is essentially Garena's version of Grand Theft Auto, set to launch on June 30th. Whether this is a positive or negative development depends on your personal taste. At a first glance, it might appear to be just another lackluster mobile clone of GTA, but upon closer inspection, there's noticeable potential.
For starters, the game boasts a comprehensive character customization system that allows for detailed Sims-like adjustments. Unlike the more realistic style of GTA, Garena Free City embraces a whimsical approach, featuring elements such as giant robots and summonable power-ups like deployable cover.
**Bold & Brash** However, it's evident that much of the game attempts to mimic the allure of Grand Theft Auto Online. This is unfortunate because the more unique aspects of Free City are truly captivating.
Yet, Garena might have picked an inopportune moment to release Free City. While I believe no single app can dominate a genre on mobile, the upcoming release of Ananta, which markets itself with an expansive open world and quirky side quests similar to Free City, but with more flair, poses significant competition. Ananta also offers a fresh take, though its anime style might deter some players. On the other hand, Free City's failure to fully embrace its uniqueness is my main critique so far.
