PS5 Disc Drive Is Back in Stock, But You May Need to Act Fast

by Adam Feb 28,2025

PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not For Long)

The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is expected to sell out quickly.

The ongoing scarcity is potentially linked to the release of the PS5 Pro, which notably lacks a disc drive option. This, coupled with the earlier release of the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, has created significant demand for the separately sold PS5 disc drive attachment, particularly in the US where supplies have been consistently low for months.

While some retailers have managed to restock, including Amazon US and PlayStation Direct (at the standard $79.99 MSRP), availability remains limited. A third-party seller on Walmart is also offering the drive, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with extremely limited stock.

Where to Buy a PS5 Disc Drive (Currently):

Store Price
Amazon US $79.99
PlayStation Direct $79.99
Walmart (Reseller) $122

PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:

PlayStation Direct is limiting PS5 disc drive purchases to one per customer, a common practice employed by Sony to deter scalpers.

The shortage, also impacting the UK since late 2024, highlights the significant demand for the disc drive, especially considering the PS5 Pro's lack of a disc drive option. Gamers seeking the optimal PS5 Pro experience alongside physical media playback must purchase the drive separately.

With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still showing the disc drive as out of stock, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
