Pesten With Cards is a classic Dutch card game that literally means "Bullying With Cards." Similar games are enjoyed worldwide, such as Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Shedding, Puque, Чешский Дурак, Фараон, Крокодил, Tschau Sepp, or Uno. The primary objective is to be the first to discard all of one's cards. A crucial rule is that the winner must announce "Last Card" before playing their final card. Failure to do so results in a penalty of drawing two additional cards.
The game can be played with multiple decks, including jokers. Each player starts with 7 cards, and the remaining cards form the draw pile or stock. The top card of the stock is flipped over to start the discard pile. Players take turns clockwise, and if a "Pest-card" is revealed at the start, it must be acted upon as if the dealer played it.
During a player's turn, they must play a card that matches either the number or suit of the top card on the discard pile. Jokers and Jacks are exceptions and can be played on any card. If a player cannot play a card, they must draw from the stock. If the drawn card can be played, the player may choose to play it immediately or keep it for a later turn.
Last Card
When a player has only one card left after playing, they must click the "Last Card" button to alert others. Forgetting to do this before playing the last card to win incurs a two-card penalty, and the last card is not played. Incorrectly announcing "Last Card" also results in a two-card penalty. Players can press the "Last Card" button at any time, not just during their turn, to ensure they remember to announce it before playing their final card.
Winning the round requires playing the last card, which cannot be a special card as detailed below.
Special Cards
Special cards trigger specific actions based on their number or type. Actions can vary, and players can customize these in the game settings. Here are the actions for each special card:
Joker: The next player must draw 5 cards. If they have a Joker, they can play it, increasing the draw penalty to 10 cards for the following player. Each subsequent Joker adds 5 more cards to the penalty. Players who draw cards cannot play them immediately; the next player continues.
Two: The next player draws 2 cards. If they have a Two, they can play it, doubling the penalty to 4 cards for the next player. Each Two played adds 2 more cards to the penalty. If enabled in settings, a Joker can be played on a Two, adding 5 cards to the penalty. A Two cannot be played on a Joker. Players drawing cards cannot play them immediately.
Seven: Players must play another card on top of a Seven. If a player cannot play a card, they must draw from the stock. Remember to announce "Last Card" if playing a Seven allows you to play your final card.
Eight: The next player skips their turn, and the turn passes to the following player. In a two-player game, this allows the player to take another turn. Similar to the Seven, this card can lead to multiple plays.
Ten: All players pass one card to the player on their left. Click on the card to pass it.
