The Hang, a fascinating member of the idiophone family, was ingeniously crafted in Switzerland. This unique instrument is fashioned from two half-shells of deep-drawn, nitrided steel sheet, meticulously glued together at the rim to form a hollow interior and a striking 'UFO shape'. The upper part, known as the "Ding," features a central 'note' that's been carefully hammered into place, surrounded by seven or eight 'tone fields' that contribute to its distinctive sound. On the flip side, the "Gu" presents a smooth surface with a central rolled hole, which, when struck along the rim, produces a tuned note. Often referred to as a handpan, the Hang is a marvel of modern musical craftsmanship.
Drawing on the principles of the steelpan, the Hang functions as a Helmholtz resonator, a testament to years of dedicated research into the steelpan and other resonant instruments. This blend of tradition and innovation results in an instrument that captivates both players and listeners alike.
