GTA 6 Mapping Project Surges Ahead with Trailer 2: 'Information Overload'

by Mia Jun 25,2025

The release of the second official *GTA 6* trailer has supercharged the long-running GTA 6 mapping project, bringing a surge of new data for fans to dissect. One of the project’s key contributors, Garza, told IGN that the trailer “really changes everything for us for the rest of the year,” signaling a major shift in their ongoing efforts.

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord has become a hub of activity, with its current 370 members—soon to surpass 400—working diligently to decode every frame of the latest trailer. According to Garza, the influx of visual and contextual clues is overwhelming in the best way possible. “We have so much new content to work on and we’re really just getting started,” he said, emphasizing how the new information reshapes the team’s approach moving forward.

The GTA 6 Mapping Discord originally formed after the massive September 2022 leaks—some of which may have been humorously acknowledged by Rockstar at the beginning of Trailer 2. Since then, the group has aimed to create the most accurate depiction of the upcoming game's map. Prior to the release of Trailer 2, their work was primarily based on those early leaks and the December 2023 teaser trailer.

The previous version of the fan-made map, released in March by lead developer DuPz0r, is now considered outdated. The wealth of details provided in Trailer 2 allows the team to refine their work significantly, leading to a much more precise and detailed cartographic representation of what’s shaping up to be Rockstar’s next open-world masterpiece.

Beyond confirming story beats, characters, and releasing 70 exclusive screenshots, Rockstar also unveiled new locations set within the fictional state of Leonida—the game’s reimagining of Florida. Among the confirmed areas are Vice City (the series' take on Miami), the tropical island chain known as the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga, a prominent natural landmark near the northern edge of the state.

In addition to identifying these locales, the mapping team is meticulously analyzing the trailer to pinpoint exact positions of visible landmarks and comparing them to real-world geography. Their goal is to finalize a more accurate version of the GTA 6 world map, which DuPz0r will eventually publish. Fans eagerly await this updated version, hoping it will offer the clearest preview yet of what to expect when the game officially launches in May 2026.

If Rockstar releases additional assets ahead of launch—especially gameplay footage—the team will restart the process from scratch. It won’t be until the game actually ships and they can cross-check their work against the final product that they’ll know just how spot-on their efforts were.

However, there remains an unspoken concern looming over the project: the possibility that Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, could issue a takedown notice at any time. This fear became reality earlier this year when a modder who created a playable recreation of the GTA 6 map inside *GTA V* was forced to shut down his work following a legal request from Take-Two. That mod was built using data from the same mapping initiative.

When asked last year whether the community feared similar action, Garza admitted to having “some mild concern.” He added, “This project has been going on for quite some time with no direct disruption to our community. However, I always keep it into consideration if they intend on communicating with us in the future for any reason.”

He went on to explain that the team avoids directly showcasing leaked materials in their maps, which gives him some confidence the project won't be taken down outright. “I believe they are aware that this project generates popularity and interest in the game, since everyone wants to see how the world may look like. This might be one of the reasons why they haven’t acted, as it’s not inherently negative. If I were ever in the situation of receiving a cease and desist though, then I would respectfully comply. As we get closer to a precise map, it may be possible to receive that notice in the future.”

Until that happens—or doesn’t—the community continues to dig deeper into the clues hidden in Trailer 2. For more updates, check out all the latest details uncovered about GTA 6, and explore the growing list of fan theories inspired by the latest trailer.
