Sony has exciting news for PlayStation fans with the announcement of a new studio, teamLFG, which has been teased with its debut game. In a detailed post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, shared that teamLFG was initially formed at Bungie, the creators of Destiny and Marathon. The studio is now working on an ambitious project that Hulst is particularly enthusiastic about.
The name teamLFG stands for ‘Looking For Group,’ a term popular in online gaming communities, indicating that social interaction is a core focus of the studio. Their first game is described as a team-based action title that blends elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and even "frog-type games." Set in a lighthearted, comedic, science-fantasy universe, the game promises to offer a unique and engaging experience.
teamLFG emphasizes the importance of community and belonging in their games, aiming to create an environment where players can forge friendships and memorable experiences. "We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," the studio stated. They envision a world where players log in to find their friends already online, fostering a sense of excitement and camaraderie. The studio aims to craft immersive multiplayer worlds that players can enjoy and master over countless hours, with plans to involve the community through early access playtests and continuous updates based on player feedback.
"We want our players to feel excited when they log on to discover their teammates already hanging out online. We want our players to recognize familiar names and to make myths and memes out of each other. We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff," teamLFG elaborated.
The development of this game stems from an incubation project at Bungie, which was spun off amid significant layoffs last year. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie faced challenges in meeting financial targets with Destiny 2, leading to layoffs in November 2023 and a subsequent round in 2024. These layoffs affected a total of 320 employees, with 155 being integrated elsewhere within Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was during this period that the incubation project, now known as teamLFG's debut game, was announced.
In related news, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing through improvements to Destiny 2, indicating a positive influence from the parent company. Recently, Bungie has unveiled more about their extraction shooter, Marathon, and outlined the future roadmap for Destiny 2. However, there are no plans for Destiny 3, and a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
