Though based in China, the studio confirmed Tencent encouraged Western themes for broader appeal: "While Black Myth: Wukong focused on Chinese folklore, Tides of Annihilation deliberately embraces Arthurian mythology for global audiences." The developers settled on Knights of the Round Table as their central motif after considering various knightly narratives.
The game transports players to a devastated modern London, where protagonist Gwendolyn appears as humanity's last hope against an Outworld invasion. This contemporary wasteland setting blends with magical elements drawn directly from Arthurian traditions.
