Paradox Interactive’s controversial decision to restrict two vampire clans behind a paywall in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 may be reversed following significant fan backlash.
The controversy erupted when developers confirmed the base game would include only four playable clans (Brujah, Tremere, Banu Haqim, and Ventrue) – a notable reduction from the seven clans available in the original cult classic. Developer The Chinese Room later revealed two additional clans (Lasombra and Toreador), but controversially locked them behind the $21.99 Shadows and Silk DLC or the $89.99 Premium Edition, while the standard edition retails for $59.99.
The day-one availability of this DLC fueled perceptions that the full clan roster had been intentionally fragmented for monetization. As expected, this sparked immediate criticism from the game's passionate fanbase.
The situation escalated during gamescom 2025 when a Paradox representative defended the decision as a "business-informed choice" in an interview with IGN. However, recent Discord communications suggest the publisher may be reconsidering.
Community developer DebbieElla addressed fans with the following statement, later surfaced on ResetEra:
"We’ve heard your feedback regarding Lasombra and Toreador clan accessibility and are implementing adjustments prior to launch. Further details will be shared soon."
While specifics remain unclear, many hope Paradox will include these clans in the base game without additional cost. Such a concession could help rebuild community goodwill before the October 21 release. This potential reversal, however, raises questions about compensation for players who already purchased the Premium Edition.
Bloodlines 2 has endured a troubled development cycle marked by delays, making this a critical launch for Paradox. With the game's success hanging in the balance, revising the DLC strategy may prove necessary. For those awaiting the verdict, IGN’s hands-on preview offers fresh insights into the upcoming RPG.
