Bethesda Clarifies: No Remake Planned for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

by Peyton Jun 29,2025

Bethesda Game Studios has taken the time to clarify the distinction behind the naming of *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered*, and why it is not being labeled as a full remake. The studio recently addressed this topic in a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), explaining its perspective on what constitutes a remaster versus a remake, and the creative direction it chose for this project.

While thanking players both new and returning to the iconic RPG, Bethesda made one thing clear: “We never wanted to remake it.” Instead, the team focused on a remaster — a version of the original game enhanced with modern visuals and subtle gameplay improvements, while preserving the core experience that fans remember.

“We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology,” Bethesda explained.

This clarification comes as players begin to explore *Oblivion Remastered* firsthand. The updated version introduces visual enhancements across environments, characters, and effects, along with small but meaningful gameplay adjustments. Among these are the addition of sprinting and a reworked level-up system, described as a hybrid between the mechanics of the original *Oblivion* and those found in *The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim*.

Despite the sheer volume of changes — from redesigned textures to improved systems — Bethesda maintains that its intent was not to overhaul the game entirely. While many remasters over the past decade have offered only minor graphical upgrades, *Oblivion Remastered* goes deeper, yet still retains the essence of the 2006 classic.

“We looked at every part and carefully upgraded it,” Bethesda continued. “But most of all, we never wanted to change the core. It’s still a game from a previous era and should feel like one.”

Bethesda expressed excitement for long-time fans revisiting Cyrodiil, while also welcoming newcomers to the world of *The Elder Scrolls*. The hope is that whether you’re stepping out of the Imperial sewers for the first time or the hundredth, the remaster brings back that sense of wonder and discovery.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and is also accessible via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
