In a recent Famitsu interview, Sucker Punch unveiled fresh insights about their upcoming Ghost series sequel. Building upon Ghost of Tsushima's acclaimed foundation, Ghost of Yotei introduces deeper gameplay mechanics and narrative layers.
Creative Director Jason Cornell revealed the game offers players more autonomy than ever before, featuring the studio's largest open world to date. "Rather than forcing linear progression," Cornell explained, "players can independently locate the Yotei Six and undertake vengeance missions at their own pace."
Expanded Weapon Arsenal
The latest trailer hinted at broader weapon choices, now confirmed by Creative Director Nate Fox. Beyond the traditional katana, players can wield odachi greatswords, kusarigama chain sickles, dual swords, and spears.
Fox clarified the katana remains central to combat, with other weapons learnable from NPC masters encountered throughout the journey. Unlike Ghost of Tsushima's samurai protagonist, Atsu faces no honor-bound restrictions - she can utilize environmental weapons dropped by enemies.
Exploring Historical Ezo
Set in 1603 Ezo (modern Hokkaido), the game portrays both the region's lawlessness and natural splendor. The developers conducted extensive Ainu cultural research through museum visits and consultations with indigenous experts.
Cornell described being awe-inspired by Hokkaido's landscapes, motivating their painstaking recreation efforts. Following Ghost of Tsushima's praised cultural authenticity, Ghost of Yotei aims to similarly honor Ainu traditions while showcasing Ezo's wilderness dangers.
