Hideo Kojima’s highly anticipated spiritual successor to Metal Gear, titled Physint, is still approximately "another five or six years" from release.
This update comes directly from Kojima himself, who shared the timeline in an interview with Le Film Francais. He explained that his long-held desire to direct a film remains on hold until he completes his first "action espionage" game since [ttpp]his very public departure from Konami in 2015[/ttpp].
“I’ve received many offers since leaving Konami, including serious proposals to develop games through my independent studio,” Kojima stated, as translated by ResetEra user [ttpp]Red Kong XIX[/ttpp]. “In addition to Death Stranding 2, we’re also working on Physint. That project alone will take another five or six years.”
He continued, “But perhaps after that, I might finally decide to pursue a film. I grew up immersed in cinema, so directing would feel like a tribute to it. Plus, I’m getting older—I’d like to do it while I’m still young enough to enjoy it!”
[ttpp]Physint[/ttpp] was originally announced in January 2024 by PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst. Since then, details have been minimal. At the time of its reveal, Kojima hinted that Physint could also be considered a movie, later clarifying via X (formerly Twitter) that the “look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, sound, etc… are all at the next level of ‘Digital Entertainment’” and could be described as cinematic in nature.
Physint is just one of several ambitious projects currently in development at Kojima Productions. Alongside it are Death Stranding 2 and OD, the latter being a brand-new IP developed in partnership with Xbox Game Studios, featuring creative contributions from actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Additionally, Kojima is consulting on A24’s upcoming film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.
Speaking of which, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is set to launch on June 26, and series lead Norman Reedus recently hinted at his potential involvement in the film adaptation, telling IGN that [ttpp]"of course" he would play himself in the movie[/ttpp].
Fresh off the heels of sharing some previously discarded game concepts—including a unique idea for a ‘Forgetting Game’ where players lose abilities and memories if they take too long a break—Kojima recently revealed that he even left his team a USB drive filled with unreleased game ideas, just in case they want to continue exploring them after he’s gone.
