Larian CEO: Single-Player Games Thrive If They're Good

by Scarlett May 07,2025

The debate over the vitality of big single-player games has resurfaced, and this time, Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian Studios and the creative force behind the acclaimed single-player game Baldur's Gate 3, has offered a definitive stance. In a recent post on X/Twitter, Vincke addressed the recurring claim that large-scale single-player games are "dead," succinctly stating, "Use your imagination. They're not. They just have to be good."

Vincke's assertion carries significant weight, given Larian Studios' track record of delivering exceptional CRPGs such as Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2, before successfully steering the ship on Baldur's Gate 3. His insights into the gaming industry are well-regarded, often highlighted at events like The Game Awards, where he emphasizes the importance of passion in game development, respect for both developers and players, and a genuine care for the craft.

The year 2025 has already witnessed the success of another major single-player title, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 by Warhorse Studios, proving that there is still a robust market for these games. With many months left in the year, there is ample opportunity for more single-player titles to capture the audience's attention.

In a notable move, Larian Studios has decided to step away from Baldur's Gate 3 and the Dungeons & Dragons franchise to focus on developing a new intellectual property. Meanwhile, at the Game Developers Conference this year, Dan Ayoub, SVP of digital games at Hasbro, hinted that fans might soon receive updates on the future of the Baldur's Gate series.
